Where is the Light? (Poetry)

The room shakes.

I break, the lights go out.

Gleaming eyes shine through the dark.

Our hope went out with the lights.

The flashlight won’t work, won’t work.

Swallowed by darkness.

Where is the light?

Scumbling over one another.

As blind as the mice.

My hand touches the switch.

Flip, flip.

It flickers for a moment.

But blackness blinds me again.

I can’t see, I can’t see.

No one answers…

Where is the light?

Breathy voices wash over me.

I collapse.

Frustration overcomes me,

I can’t see, I can’t see…

This deep dark hole pushes me down farther.

I catch my breath.

Where is the light?
